INTRODUCTION:

Ms. Payne’s book gives us much insight into the world of poverty and the hidden rules of the economic classes in our society.  The fact that poverty knows no boundaries and occurs in all races is a key point of this book.  Its impact is far-reaching.

As teachers, you will undoubtedly have a diverse group of students (race, religion, socio-economic status, academic level).  Your ability to work with and meet the needs of that diverse classroom will be a constant challenge.  It will be through your understanding and appreciation of the classroom’s diversity that you become a stronger, more effective teacher.

After reading A Framework for Understanding Poverty, you will better understand the importance of recognizing all students’ talents (no matter how big or small) and encouraging them to pursue their dreams regardless of their socioeconomic status.

TASKS

Examine various websites for background information and statistics on poverty in the U.S.

Now take the information from your searches, along with Dr. Payne’s text and prepare the following:

  1. A detailed list of 4 sources of help for economically disadvantaged students in your area. (typed and titled “SOS Resources”)

Number the resources and give the name, address, phone # and a contact person (if known) for each listing.  In 1 or 2 sentences below each resource, include a description of the services they offer.

  1. Write a 1 page summary titled “Minimizing the Effects of Poverty”. In your own words indicate what you as a teacher can do to minimize the effects of poverty on children in the classroom (be specific).  When writing this paper, consider the following:  What, if any, are the definitive class barriers in our society?  Does having been born poor mean that a person will always feel inferior to those who weren’t?  Do financial or professional achievements raise a person’s “class” level?  Can we as teachers, truly make a difference in the lives of our students regardless of their home life?

  1. Prepare a multimedia presentation of your interpretation/reaction to “Framework for Understanding Poverty” that appealed to you as a teacher. You may use the information you gathered on your Internet search as well.  The method of presentation is your choice.  (i.e. PowerPoint presentation, collage with oral presentation, handouts with oral presentation) This will be presented to the class as indicated on the syllabus.  This can be done in collaboration with one other classmate or as an individual project.
