Associate of Applied Science in Clinical Laboratory Technology

Distance Learning Program

Occupational Description

Clinical Laboratory Technicians are health professionals skilled both in the theory and practice of clinical laboratory procedures that provide data, which physicians use to determine the absences, presence, extent and cause of disease.

Clinical Laboratory Technicians must be accurate, dedicated, skilled and self-motivated.

Length of Program

The Clinical Laboratory Technician Program requires approximately two (2) years to complete. An Associate of Applied Science Degree will be awarded upon successful completion of the 41 hours of CLT courses and the additional general education course work required by Kentucky Community and Technical College system.

Clinical Laboratory Technician Distance Learning Program

The distance learning program will be set up utilizing four sources:

  1. a local college for general education courses required for graduation;
  2. Madisonville Community College for the Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) coursework;
  3. access to the Kentucky Virtual University for delivery of the CLT distance learning courses;
  4. and a clinical affiliate for the final year of clinical training.

The CLT distance learning program is set up so that all lecture, homework, and quizzes will be presented over the internet.

The CLT student will be required to attend a mandatory lab on the Health Campus of Madisonville Community College on a bi-weekly schedule for the first year of the program. This is to ensure the student is prepared in basic laboratory skills needed for their clinical rotations.

During the second year, the CLT student will be required to rotate through all areas of the clinical laboratory: phlebotomy, hematology, blood bank, urinalysis, serology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology. This last year of the degree will require a minimum of 600 clock hours of clinical training at a local clinical affiliate.
