Community

Madisonville Community College has been proudly serving Hopkins and surrounding counties since 1968, and we're not just for college students. We offer a wide range of activities to meet the needs of our service area's diverse population.

Educational and Cultural Programs

Madisonville Community College provides programs that are both educational and entertaining for audiences of all ages and interests.

Glema Mahr Center for the Arts

The Glema Center auditorium and lighted stage

The Glema Mahr Center for the Arts was the first multi-purpose performing arts center to open in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. The 37,000 square foot structure consists of a 1,053 seat proscenium main stage theater (which can be converted to a 200-seat black box theater) and the 7,300 square foot Anne P. Baker Gallery.

The Glema Center provides regional public and private elementary and secondary school performances through the School Days Matinees program, and develops local talent through community-based productions and the Summer Arts Academy. A variety of musical performances are offered by the Chamber Music Series and the Coffeehouse Performance Series. The Anne P. Baker Gallery exhibits local, regional and national artwork free of charge.

For up-to-date information on upcoming Glema Center performances, visit http://www.glemacenter.org.

TRIO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound

In addition to administering the TRIO Student Support Services program for college students, Madisonville Community College also houses the TRIO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound programs for local middle and high school students.

Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded TRIO program that provides educational guidance services to encourage individuals in the pursuit of further education or training after high school. Individuals in the program receive information and assistance on career and academic planning. ETS is designed to help students who are enrolled in schools and adults who are interested in continuing their education. Nine hundred middle and high school students participate in the ETS program.

Upward Bound is an academic enrichment program that encourages high school students to improve academic skills and matriculate to post-secondary institutions. The program also provides educational opportunities not typically available to disadvantaged youth and enhances the academic relationships between students, parents and educators. Participants usually begin during their freshman year and remain with the program throughout high school.

Adult Centers for Educational Excellence (ACE2)

ACE2 maintains locations on Madisonville Community College's Technical Campus, Parkway Plaza Mall in Madisonville, Judson Jenkins Learning Center in Dawson Springs, and the Muhlenberg County Adult Education Center in Powderly. Teaching professionals at these locations provide remediation in basic academic skills, computer training, and standardized test preparation and review at no cost.

For more information, visit the ACE2 web site.

President's Special Projects

The President of Madisonville Community College has initiated the following programs to strengthen the relationship between Madisonville Community College and our community.

School Counts

The logo of the School Counts program

One of the most difficult tasks facing employers in Hopkins County is determining the level of workplace readiness and educational preparedness in job applicants. The high school transcript does not tell an employer that the student has basic workforce skills. As an alternative source of information, the School Counts program awards student certificates, which are a workplace readiness indicator that can easily be understood by a potential employer.

The criteria a student must meet before earning a School Counts certificate are as follows:

Certificates are awarded at the end of each academic year. The certificates are a handy way of alerting an employer that the job candidate sitting before them has developed strong workforce readiness skills in the areas of Quality, Attendance, Persistence, and Rigor.

Beginning with the class of 2008, all of the students in Hopkins County who graduate from high school and earn four consecutive School Counts program certificates will receive up to $1000 per semester for four semesters for tuition to Madisonville Community College. This support will be for students who do not qualify for other types of scholarships or financial aid. It will be used in combination with available KEES money.

Rhoads Scholar

The Rhoads Scholar Program works to let students and their parents know that obtaining a college education is an affordable option for every student....and for their parents and families. The Rhoads Scholar Program is a direct resource to the schools, providing important information to students, faculty, staff, and parents regarding careers, college admissions, financial aid information, adult education, and more. Faculty and staff members visit their schools, conducting workshops and activities for students and their parents throughout the school year.

The goals of the Rhoads Scholar Program are:

College Bound

Madisonville Community College student and employee volunteers visit 5th and 6th grade classrooms in Hopkins and Muhlenberg Counties as part of the College Bound program. For many students, this is the first introduction to information regarding higher education and introduces students to concepts such as types of types of institutions, admissions process, financial aid, student activities, etc. College Bound emphasizes no particular higher education institution or course of study, educating the class about the benefits of and choices made available in their future through higher education. The program culminates with an on-campus visit by the 5th and 6th grade students with a graduation ceremony, classes taught by college faculty and staff, and campus tours. College Bound is a nationwide program aimed primarily at children grades 4 through 6.
