Clincial Laboratory Technician

Program Description

Clinical Laboratory Technicians are health professionals skilled in both the theory and practice of clinical laboratory procedures that provide data which physicians use to determine the absence, presence, extent and cause of disease. Clinical Laboratory Technicians must be accurate, dedicated, skilled and self-motivated.

The Clinical Laboratory Technician coursework is delivered through traditional classroom lecture or distance learning with scheduled on-campus laboratories and clinical experiences.

Licensure and Accreditation

National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (NCA), which costs $125, is given in January and July. American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP), which costs $135, is given in January and July. Both of these licensure tests require completion of required course work at any KCTCS college and the CLT program.

Employment Opportunities

Clinical Laboratory Technicians are employed by hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, research facilities, public health centers, veterinary offices, clinics, colleges, industry and the Armed Forces. The average wage in Kentucky is $27,000. Employment throughout the United States ranges from $21,840 to $33,280.

Length of Program

This program is 2 years in length. In addition, graduates of the CLT program can increase their opportunities by transferring to a university and applying their credits towards a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Environmental Science, Forensic Medicine, Genetics, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology or Pre-med. Vast opportunities are available to students in this area of study.
