This program prepares the student for a medical office career in a variety of healthcare settings. Medical information professionals prepare medical records and reports, maintain files, order supplies, transcribe medical documentation, assign national billing codes, perform accounting procedures and receive patients in a variety of healthcare settings. Laboratory and classroom experiences are combined to prepare graduates for careers in healthcare offices.
Depending on which option the student selects to study, they can expect to make between $20,000 - $30,000 per year with a fairly quick opportunity to increase to the mid $30,000 range. It is expected that healthcare careers will increase over the next 10 years.
The Medical Information Technology program offers a variety of options. These include two diplomas (Medical Transcription and Medical Insurance Technician) which can be completed in three semesters and an Associate of Applied Science in General Occupational Studies Degree with options in Medical Transcription, Insurance Coding, Medical Records or Administrative Assistant. The AAS can be completed in two years. The two certificates for the program, Medical Receptionist and Administrative Health Unit Coordinator, can be completed in two semesters.
