Machinists use machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, and milling machines to produce precision metal parts. They use their knowledge of the working properties of metals such as steel, cast iron, aluminum, and brass and their skill with machine tools to plan and carry out operations needed to make machined products that meet precise specifications. The skills needed for this occupation are taught through classroom instruction, demonstration, and hands-on experience.
Employment in this occupation is found in all localities and in all industries. Most machinists work in modern surroundings with up-to-date equipment. They work in industries, keeping mechanical equipment in good working order, or in the production department of metalworking industries, producing parts. Machinists may advance to all levels of supervision.
Two full years for a full-time student. Courses are offered during two 16-week semesters (August-December and January-May) and one six-week summer intersession, if needed.
