Practical Nursing

Admission Requirements:

The following should be submitted to the Office of Admissions for admission to this program:

Application for admission (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)
High School transcript or GED
ACT, COMPASS, or ASSET scores
Transcripts of all previous college work
Age verification (must be 16 years of age)

The following must be completed before being accepted into the program. Submit the following information to the Program Coordinator:

Letter of Application to Program Coordinator by October 1 for the Spring semester and April 1 for Fall semester
Copy of COMPASS / ACT Scores
Official High School and College Transcripts
Verification of Nurse Aid course or its equivalent
Copy of current CPR card

Program Description

The Practical Nursing program prepares individuals to practice within the legal scope of practical nursing to provide care to those who are experiencing illness. In addition, they provide health education and promote good health habits to members of the community who are seeking to maintain optimal health. Students are admitted each January and August.

Upon completion of this Kentucky Board of Nursing approved education program, an individual must pass the National Council Licensure Examination - Practical Nurse in order to be licensed to practice as an LPN.

Employment Opportunities

Licensed Practical Nurses are employed in a variety of health care settings, such as: acute and long-term care facilities, home health agencies, clinics, schools, physician and dentist offices, industrial settings and rehabilitation agencies. Salaries in Kentucky range from between $18,000 - $30,000.

Length of Program

The program may be completed in three semesters. Graduates of the Practical Nursing program may earn transfer credits with the opportunity to apply for admission with advanced standing to the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (Registered Nursing) Program. Information about Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in General Occupational / Technical Studies (GOTS)

Credit earned through certificate and diploma program completion will be applicable toward the Associate in Applied Science in General Occupational / Technical Studies (GOTS) degree when consistent with the objectives of the student's individual plan of study. This heavily advisor-driven model can combine certificates and / or diplomas in different disciplines for meeting employer needs for unique skill combinations for which there is no established degree program.

As many as twenty (20) hours of credit for experiential learning may be applied toward degree completion. KCTCS certificate and diploma credit and acceptable credit transferred from other colleges may also be applied to a student's program completion plan. At least twenty-five percent (25%) of the approved curriculum credits must be completed at the KCTCS institution granting the degree.
