Firefighters across the state are showing their support of firefighter Joe Vissing through The Cold Water Challenge.
The Cold Water Challenge is a unique fundraiser for Lexington firefighter Vissing. Vissing was diagnosed in April with melanoma, which has spread to his brain.
“When it’s one of your own, it really hits home,” said Kentucky Fire Commission Executive Director Ronnie Day. “Firefighters are like family…we will do what it takes to support Vissing during this difficult time.”
There are three main rules of the challenge:
- Individuals have 24-hours to take The Cold Water Challenge after being “called out.”
- A $10 donation must be made to the Joe Vissing medical fund.
- Individuals accepting the challenge must “call out” three other people to take the challenge.
Those who choose not to take the challenge are encouraged to donate $100 to the medical fund.
In addition to The Cold Water Challenge, firefighters are also organizing a golf scramble to help Vissing and his family. The golf scramble will be June 13 at Connemara Golf Course in Nicholasville. To sign up a team/individual, contact Ron King at (859) 940-8845. For more information about The Cold Water Challenge, visit the Lexington Fire Department's Facebook page. Donations for Joe Vissing are also being accepted at any Chase Bank.
