National Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13. The Kentucky Community and Technical College System’s (KCTCS) Kentucky Fire Commission encourages everyone to identify fire risks and to be prepared.
This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007-2011, resulting in 400 civilian deaths, 5,080 civilian injuries and $853 million in direct damage. Stats also show two of every five home fires start in the kitchen.
“It is so important to maintain your home smoke detectors,” said Kentucky Fire Commission Executive Director Ronnie Day. “Whether it begins in the kitchen or elsewhere, having a working smoke detector in your home can save your life.”
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.
Fire Prevention Tips
* Have properly working smoke alarms.
* Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.
* Place smoke alarms on each floor of your home and in each bedroom.
* Plan a family escape route and practice it once a month.
* Install a home sprinkler system.
